Engineering Intern - Summer 2026

Location: Houston, TX, on-site

Department: Engineering

Salary: $25/hr

Background & Job Description:

Discovered at the University of Houston in 1987, high temperature superconducting (HTS) tape delivers dramatically higher current densities than copper and aluminum with near-zero resistance. AMPeers is a technology startup out of Houston, TX, developing next-generation REBCO high-temperature superconductor tapes and symmetric tape round (STAR®) superconducting wires. Our technology enables the widespread adoption of superconductors in fusion magnets, power transmission, and next-generation energy systems.

To bring this technology from pilot scale to commercial production, AMPeers is building specialized manufacturing equipment and processes in-house. Engineering interns will be embedded within our equipment engineering team and will own a focused improvement project on a single subsystem of our advanced MOCVD deposition tool over the course of the summer.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Own a scoped hardware or controls project on one subsystem of AMPeers' advanced MOCVD tool, targeting measurable improvements in performance, reliability, or repeatability. Subsystems include precursor delivery and laminar flow, substrate heating and temperature control, reel-to-reel tape transport, and in-line process monitoring and data acquisition.
  • Work directly with the equipment engineering team to understand system-level requirements and constraints before diving into subsystem work.
  • Generate CAD models or fabrication drawings as needed. (SolidWorks or equivalent)
  • Document findings, design decisions, and test results in a format that carries forward after the internship ends.
  • Participate in troubleshooting sessions and contribute to tool uptime and process improvement efforts.

Requirements:

  • Currently pursuing a BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
  • Comfort working on ambiguous, hands-on hardware problems.
  • Familiarity with at least one relevant domain: precursor delivery and gas flow systems, thermal and heating systems, motion and tape transport mechanics, or instrumentation and data acquisition.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Any hands-on lab, research, or industry experience with manufacturing equipment or process systems.
  • Experience with automation or controls tools (Python, LabVIEW, PLC, embedded systems, etc.)
  • Exposure to thin-film deposition, vacuum systems, or materials characterization.

Applicants should submit their resume to kumis@ampeers-llc.com. AMPeers is an equal opportunity employer. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds.
